Jonathan Tupper's Dvar on Noah

  Jonathan Tupper's Dvar on Noah
Parashat Noah

In the Noah story nearly everyone dies from the flood. There are other flood stories in histories in history besides the Noah story. The two other flood stories are the Greek and Mesopotamia myths. In the Greek flood story Zeus punished the people for doing evil deeds. The Titan Prometheus who could see into the future told his son, Deucalion, to build on ark. When Zeus the king of the gods opened the heavens and the water fell from the sky, Deucalion and his wife, Pyrrha, went in the ark and stayed in it while it rained. When it stopped raining they got out of the ark and prayed to the gods and asked them what to do. Zeus told them to throw stones over their shoulders. After they had done this there was a group of men behind Deucalion and and a group of women behind his wife.

In the Mesopotamia version one of the gods convinces the other gods to kill all of mankind. One god, Ea, wanted to save one of his human servants. He said to him, “Build a ship. When it is completed, leave your home and go on it.” His servant, Utapishtim, replied, “I will carry out your orders, but what should I say to the people of the city when they ask what I'm doing?”. Ea told him to tell them: I cannot stay here, so I'll go to the ocean to my lord Ea.” After Utapishtim finished the ship he put all of his belonging on it. He put all of his animals, workers and family on the ship. The gods sent a storm and it destroyed everything. When the storm stopped he went off the boat.

Most people like to look at the differences between the three flood stories, but I'd like to point the similarities. All three flood stories have the destruction of people and the gods help a few people survive. The people had all built arks to protect themselves from the destruction created by the god or gods.

In all three of these stories the gods send disaster in a supernatural form, like a huge flood that no one has ever seen before. But, in all three stories the gods help the mortals survive the disaster. The way the gods save them isn't by lifting them up in the air. Instead the gods give them knowledge and it's up to the humans to use that knowledge. And if they don't use the knowledge they will die. One message is you have to make the best use of the knowledge that you have.

I know that a lot of people have helped me prepare for and celebrate this day. I can't mention everyone but here are a few of the people who helped me. My grandpa made my talit. My parents made the preparations for today. And Bev fox tied my tzeetzeet.
